Art works on and within people to change and inspire them; it addresses the need people have to create, to imagine, to aspire to something more.” Rocco Landesman, NEA

Artist Shari Keith will lead workshop participants on a recycling journey to discover that they can truly transform junk into treasure.  Using different types of discarded materials, participants in this all-day workshop will create several pieces of visually exciting and environmentally friendly art.

Found objects have been used by artists for most of the 20th century. Names like Picasso, Louise Nevelson, Kurt Schwitters, and Dali were proponents of the use of found objects to create art. They created a bulls head from a bicycle seat, sculpture from discarded wooden objects, sculpture from plumbing fixtures, boxes filled with related objects that signified something to viewers.  Shari will bring objects to the class with her. The student is free to create from them or to bring their own found objects.  Shari will guide you as you bring your creativity to the forefront. No rules, formulas, recipes, or patterns will be used.  This is a fun workshop with an open-minded approach. If you've always wanted to jump into the art of assemblage, jewelry making, or collage, now is your chance.

Shari Keith, who is known as The Junk Lady, is a collector of junk extraordinaire.  She creates jewelry and art from found objects, and her work has been featured in galleries throughout the U.S.  Her unique way of using junk to decorate her home was featured in the Arizona Republic, and almost all of the clothing she wears is recycled.  Shari holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree in Education. She is a Roster Artist for the Arizona Commission on the Arts and works as a teaching artist who shares her passion for the environmental and artistic benefits of using found and discarded items as a medium for creating art.
